What is Love Anyway?

love

  [luhv]noun, verb, loved, lov·ing.
–noun
1.
a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person.
2.
a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection, asfor a parent, child, or friend.
3.
sexual passion or desire.
4.
a person toward whom love is felt; beloved person; sweetheart.

(I decided to stop when the definition became circular...)
Love has no clear cut definition.  That is the plain and simple truth.  It is best described using examples such as, love is like watching the sun rise.  That is certainly not the best example but the message is clear: we don't really know how to define it.  If we did then life would be so much easier.  People wouldn't have to go around wondering if their version of love was the same as another persons.  Love would just be.

Take for example a situation between a couple in love.  On the one hand one person fauns over the other and expresses how they feel through physical contact.  On the other hand their partner chooses to leave notes of deep admiration and tends to not talk about how they feel on a regular basis.  An onlooker may see the couple out and about, one hugging and kissing the other like crazy while the other simply stands nearby, modestly accepting the affection.  To this onlooker something may seem off about what is happening between them, but to the couple it is just a night out.  The onlooker's version of love might not have included the standoff-ish behavior of the one partner.  Or perhaps the display of affection threw the onlooker off.  It depends on the person, and that is where confusion surfaces.

What does love look like and how does it act?  I have already highlighted two variances of behavior but that hardly covers the nearly infinite possibilities.  It would be inconceivable to attempt to outline them all and silly to outline a few.  Where would this get us?  About as far as it has thus far, not very...So, what is love?

Until…
The vast division between us all,
Slowly fades away with each passing day,
The tides of change are quickly rising,
And when they leave, unity will be left,

A bond which was always there,
Will be reinforced and made stronger,
No gale nor fire,
Earthquake or monsoon,
Could so much as shake the foundation,
Let alone topple it’s structure,

The world will become whole again,
And all the evils will turn to dust,
A perfect harmony shall exist among us,
Until…

See how easy it is to paint the picture of love with words that do not even use it. I just defined love with words like "fades" and "monsoon", neither of which have anything to do with love in the first place. How can this be? People are visual and emotions spring forth from these images creating lasting impressions. Very seldom does talking about a past feeling bring it up, but the moment one looks at a picture the emotions come flooding back.

Love is a very complex phenomena that must be experienced to be understood. No matter how many examples I give or how many poems I write the true emotion of love will not come through. Love is amazing and can create the most extreme of feelings, both gleeful and pained. But perhaps the biggest mystery is how love can be so many different things to so many different people but still only have one word to describe it.
